No Limit Texas Hold Em
Thanks to ESPN's coverage of the World Series of Poker, the
invention of the pocket hole cam (where you can see player's
cards),
and the rise of unknowns becoming world champions, the
popularity
of poker, especially Texas Hold Em, has grown beyond belief!
Even I play (for fun) at the ESPN poker club learning that
the psychology class I took in college has some benefits in real life.
I would be classified as a 'fish', 'dead money', 'atm', etc...
But, I'm learning... and it's fun!
Sometimes it's more about how a player bets in certain situations
than the actual cards you are holding that wins tournaments.
(my less-than-creative espn poker room name is 'clayvision'.)
Should I ever start playing in live tournaments, maybe I will
chronicle my journey here... I will also review poker video games
as I am always ready to game with my PS2, Xbox, or PSP.
Playing for Money Online:
One thing to watch out for when playing online is collusion.
What's to stop you and me from sitting at an online table and calling
each other on the phone with the cards we are holding. What's
scary is that you could sit at a table with 7 people colluding
together and then you can kiss your money goodbye. Even in a
tournament, there are ways you can pass money to each other.
I could list a bunch of websites and recommend them for you
(to play with real money). Many websites do this and it's because
they get a commission if you start an account. I'm not going
to do that unless I actually play them myself online.

Here are some (unbiased?) reviews of books and software...
I am currently trying to read all of these books...
Click on the pictures or game title to view more info on the software at
Amazon.com.

Harrington
on Hold Em (Volume One)
Strategic Play
by Dan HarringtonAmazon.com Price: $19.18
An absolutely awesome book for the beginner or intermediate
player. Learn about position, pot odds, and all the basics. However, it is a
very conservative style of poker that is being described as Dan is a very tight player.
Super aggressive players should probably look at the next book below for strategic
help, but a great read nonetheless. |

|
Super
System
Power Poker
by Doyle BrunsonAmazon.com Price: $19.18
This book is a bit dated, as it was written in the 70's, by
superstar Doyle Brunson. It covers all the different poker games with help from
experts Mike Caro, David Sklansky, Chip Reese, and others. Considered to be 'the'
poker book, before the poker boom. Please note that Doyle has a very aggressive
strategy to no limit hold em in contrast to Harrington's conservative style. |

Harrington
on Hold Em (Volume Two)
Endgame Play
by Dan HarringtonAmazon.com Price: $19.18
Part Two features more great help for the beginner or
intermediate player. He explains how to approach shorter tables and eventually end
game play. This book also describes many of the bluffs and manuevers that the pros
all know how to make. Another excellent read. |

|
Super
System 2
A Course in Power Poker
by Doyle BrunsonAmazon.com Price: $22.38
624 pages of poker commentary by some of the legends of poker.
This book, like the first, covers many different games and features commentary by
Mike Caro, Daniel Negreanu, Johnny Chan, Jennifer Harman and other great legends.
Remember that this book does not completely focus on No Limit Hold Em and I'm not sure how
much of an improvement this is upon the first book. |

|
Caro's
Book of Poker Tells
by Mike CaroAmazon.com Price: $16.47
Thinking about playing any type of poker at a real, sit-down
table? Well, here is an excellent guide to poker tells with pictures. Try to figure
out if the guy/girl across from you is acting a tell or giving you a tell. Adding
this knowledge to (hopefully) your sharp card skills should translate into more success.
I'm going out on a limb here, but I don't think it will increase your online
success... |

The
Theory of Poker
by David SklanskyAmazon.com Price: $19.18
Ready for math class. Here is a book that doesn't just do
the math, but gives you many insights into the theories and concepts in different poker
games. Many books reference David's theories that are laid out in this book and it
will definitely keep you thinking when you play poker. |
